Where to start??
Firstly you'll need to decide if you wish to have your own domain name, ie. www.yourbusinessname.com.au, also referred to as a website address, or URL (Universal Resource Locator).
Domain names are usually registered for two years and cost as low as AUD $77.00.
We highly recommend having your own domain name. It is relatively inexpensive and allows your business to be more easily recognised. |

Your domain name, and website once it is created will need to be hosted on computers that run 24 hours a day, referred to as "servers". These are simply high capacity computers, running 24 hours a day, which are connected to high speed data lines.
Most ISP's, (Internet Service Providers), allocate customers some server space but are reluctant for that space to be used for commercial purposes so after deciding to have your own domain name you need to decide which hosting company you'll prefer to use for your domain name and website, once it is created.
Once again, hosting is relatively inexpensive, usually less than $10.00 per month. Further discounts are usually offered if your prepared to pay quarterly or annually.
Don't be too afraid of making a decision. From our experience, while there are exceptions to every rule, most hosting companies are reliable and it's difficult to go wrong.
Now, you've spent around $150, tax deductable we might add, and you have your own domain name and hosting company. Now all you need is a website created.... |

Website Development
Once again it's difficult to go wrong, as most website developers are also friendly and reliable, however some simple precautions will ensure the development of your new site is trouble free.
- Visit the website of the developer and check their site for image quality, correct grammar and spelling. Pay particular attention to errors that may be generated.
- Most website developers have a page on their site which is a portfolio of previous sites they have developed. Peruse their portfolio for quality and contact their other clients for a referral. If they don't have a portfolio page ask them for some links to sites they have developed.
- When the specifications of your site have been determined ask the developer for a written quote and time frame for production.
Fees for website development do vary. We generally charge $100.00 per required page, although some may charge as high as $300.00, so it does pay to shop around. Expense does not necessarily guarantee high quality. |

Finally...
Of course this is not all there is to know about getting your website produced, like most things there are some pitfalls, but armed with the above knowledge you should at least have the basic knowledge required to talk to hosting companies and developers and understand more about what is discussed.
